Today was another exciting day. After a night that was surprisingly okay despite the dirty room and the too soft bed we went to have breakfast at a pancake place. I ordered two banana pancakes which turned out to be huge. Even with Marco's help I didn't manage to finish them. They were good though!
The sky was still cloudy after we finished our breakfast so we began our exploration of Monterey at the aquarium. Our airbnb host works there and gave us two free passes which was great. Even before we went in, we saw lots of seals lazily lying on the beach, so cute!
The aquarium was an amazing experience, we spent quite a lot of time at the jellyfish section, saw the otters and lots of other marine animals. There was also a "petting section", where you could actually touch sea cucumbers, crabs, sea weeds and lots of other marine animals and plants. I was a bit reluctant but Marco loved it. I was content with watching and listening to the explanations of the staff.
When we left the museum the sun had come out and we began our stroll through Monterey. At first we went down the Cannary Row and bought a few souvenirs and then went to Fishermen's Wharf (surprise, Monterey also has a Fishermen's Wharf!). We had delicious crepes there at Crepes of Brittany (which is even listed at the Lonely Planet as well worth a visit) and saw even more seals and a few sea lions. At least they weren't on a holiday or whatever the ones from San Francisco are doing right now... I always love seeing animals that I only know from the zoo in their natural environment (well, at least as long as it isn't a dangerous animal!).
Then we finally got to the beach, my first time at the Pacific! I took off my shoes and went into the water (only with my feet though). It immediately became clear why hardly anyone was swimming, the water was cold!! Still it was lovely, the sun was shining, the beach wasn't crowded and we took a long walk. At first the surf was rather moderate but the waves got higher and higher, it was quite cool to watch. Also there where the remains of a dead whale on the beach, it looked pretty weird. No smell though as the wind was coming from the sea.
Now we're back at our crappy place for the night, so glad we can leave tomorrow. Monterey is a great place though and I start getting used to the Californian way of life. Tomorrow is the fourth of July and I'm really excited about it, never was in the US at that time before. We're planning to see the fireworks in Santa Barbara where we've booked a room for one night
