Today we woke up to a lovely breakfast provided by our hosts, cinnamon bread and fresh fruits. The night in the barn was good but hot as there was no air condition. We left towards Palm Springs where we wanted to hit the spa and also we needed a place to let our tyres checked as the warning light in our car was flashing, indicating that the air pressure was either too high or too low.The route led us through the mountains and we made a few foto stops as the view was amazing.
When we arrived in Palm Springs it was hot (and by that I mean really hot!). The weather app of my phone showed 38 degrees Celsius at first and later even 41 degrees, I've never encountered such temperatures before. Getting out of the car felt like being in an oven, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable living there. After we had our tyres checked (everything turned out to be okay) we drove to the Two Palm Bunch Spa in Desert Hot Springs which was recommended by my travel guide. The spa was a lovely place. The all natural pool was framed by palm trees and that was where we spent the better part of the afternoon. Floating in the warm spring water or sitting by the pool drinking ice cucumber water felt like a dream in this boiling hot city. Eventually we had to leave the spa. It was still extremely hot and at the same time really stormy, quite weird weather conditions but probably not unusual for the desert.
We had to skip our next destination, the Imperial Dunes, as we wanted to arrive at the cabin we had rented for the night before it got dark. Our hosts had warned us that it wouldn't be easy to find and also that there only was a dirt road leading to the property so we didn't want to take a risk. Their recommendation for the dirt road was "the faster you drive, the less bumpy it feels". We stuck to the speed limit though ;-)
The cabin was amazing, it's in Joshua Tree right in the desert, I've never seen such a place before. It was designed and built by an architect who told us she didn't want to work for clients anymore but makes a living now together with her partner by buying property in the desert, building cabins there and renting them. Our place was beautiful, simple with style and very clean. The toilet and the shower were located a few meters away from the house in an open shed which was a bit of a challenge. Our host told us about snakes (the occasional rattlesnake, three in two years but still, they're there), spiders and other animals living in the desert and advised us to always be careful and have a close look before going or sitting somewhere. I tried to limit the use of the bathroom to a minimum and was lucky not to see any insects or whatever.
We spent a relaxing evening there on the patio with a bottle of cider we had bought the day before in Julian. My friend claimed the hammock for himself and only left it for a short walk before it got dark. Night falls quickly in the desert but because of the full moon we didn't have to worry about finding our way back. There actually was so much light that I took a moon shadow selfie with my camera.
The cabin had air condition but still was pretty hot but we got to bed rather earlyish after a bit of stargazing and spent a good night there.
